Introduction



Welcome to my blog/post about my class 3A BBDC driving experience :) I initially didn't have the idea to create a blog for this but honestly, I've spent a substantial amount of time at BBDC and I felt it would be great to document this journey! I already made plans to learn driving before the A levels and after the exams I went to research on the courses offered by different centres. Why BBDC? I think it was an easy choice for me because BBDC has a good track record and my dad as well as my friends enrolled or are enrolling there. Location wise, it's actually far (~1.5hrs) but most of the time my dad drove me there so it wasn't too bad. I don't really mind also tbh... The well structured lessons and quality teaching there more than made up for the trouble of travelling. Also walking from the MRT station to the driving centre is a form of exercise haha. I'm sure CDC and SSDC are good places to learn driving as well but I definitely don't regret joining BBDC!

I chose auto car because ...most cars in Singapore now are auto and I wouldn't need to learn manual driving unless I plan to drive in the UK etc. Did I regret not learning manual? If I were to be really honest, yes because I do enjoy driving although it is hard to believe when I've messed up so many times in an auto car during lessons😂 Definitely not a big car enthusiast like one of my instructors <ahem> but people who enjoy the experience of driving will appreciate the flexibility and control (gear shifting) in manual cars I guess 😅....which are mostly performance cars/sports cars that I won't ever drive HAHA. Auto is easier (no need to operate clutch, find bite point, moving off slopes is easier, engine wouldn't stall...) too so I thought why not make it easy for myself :') 

Why learn from school instead of private? Not going to delve so much into this because I believe both have their own benefits, but the simple answer is I didn't know any good instructor and so school would be a more reliable choice. Also it's nice to have some structure for my learning. Got allocated to group G8030 and didn't opt for fixed group/instructor (wanted to learn from different instructors)...and so I completed registration and officially began my journey on the 14th of Feb, 2022 👍🏻



Note: I'll leave some tips/advice for those planning to learn auto too at the end of this blog (the last post), some are things that I had to discover and find out myself by asking around or through my personal experience, so if I can save someone the trouble then why not? Btw there are also many blogs online created by others to share their experiences so if you're reading this and planning to learn driving, check em out too! Just google "bbdc experience".

Special mention: I attended lessons with my friend SW  (when I registered, she already started learning), I managed to match our lesson schedules by booking the same time slots as her and we were able to share tips and learning points, which certainly helped our driving in some way. Its definitely less stressful attending lessons with a friend! (Once we were late and we had to rush to find our allocated cars ahaha but thats v rare, we're usually punctual :>)  

Also yep I know my blog is much more comprehensive in terms of the description of each lesson I attend but that's how I write and the way I think I can best preserve my memories of my BBDC driving experience. (Also because each lesson is memorable in its own way 👍)
From my writings you can see that I made many mistakes (like...a lot) as a newbie driver and that's how its like at the start. The starting is always the hardest, BUT you are allowed to make mistakes (you will make some even if you try your hardest not to, the instructor will guide and help you) and slowly but surely you will gain the confidence and get better in your judgement. Trust the process!!

Practical lessons: Stage 3

For Stage 3 we learn how to drive in the circuit and here I really get the chance to familiarise myself with the layout, numbers and the various parts of the circuit. Parking is also learnt here (thats the one thing I'm pretty scared of because there's little room for error with the narrow parking space)! Also, driving in the circuit can be tricky because its easy to be careless and turn from the wrong lane or turn right from a left only lane etc, which is why everytime I'm in the circuit, I try to remind myself to be alert!  Day 14 Okay so compared to driving on the public roads, driving in the circuit is more monotonous, dry and "boring" haha. Today's instructor was the same female instructor from a previous lesson and I know she's quite friendly and approachable so I was looking forward to the lesson... Driving Orientation Course

Why DOC: I didn't want to lose touch with driving after getting my license, so I planned to practice continuously and drive my family around places too. But the thought of driving on expressways and inside multi-story car parks is quite scary to a new driver like me, and since BBDC offered DOC to train learners like me who just graduated from the driving course in expressways and MSCP aspects, I thought why not? It would be good to get some professional guidance too. The only drawback is the cost of the lessons, but honestly I felt that DOC would be helpful and the benefits would outweigh the costs. Enrollment: From what I read on BBDC's website, you need to first book an appointment then physically go to the driving centre on your appointment date to enroll. But....apparently, from what I gathered from others who enrolled in DOC, that is old protocol and apparently you can just walk in without an appointment for enrollment. The Practical Test

The striking double L plates for test car😤 I booked 4/8 (Thursday) session 7 for my practical test following the advice of my instructor to book sessions 3-7 on weekdays and avoid Fridays and weekends. I arrived at Room 3 (the warm-up waiting area) 30 minutes before the warm-up time, got my car number from an instructor and waited for my warm-up instructor to come. Got called early and the warm-up session is basically like another practical lesson, I went through the circuit courses and then drove briefly on the road, with the instructor giving me some useful tips and comments. I feel like my warm-up session went better than the actual test HAHA because it's an instructor in the car, not the tester so I was less nervous. After warm-up the instructor parked the car and told me to remember my car number and which lot the car is parked at (because later have to bring the tester to the car).
