Driving Orientation Course

Why DOC: I didn't want to lose touch with driving after getting my license, so I planned to practice continuously and drive my family around places too. But the thought of driving on expressways and inside multi-story car parks is quite scary to a new driver like me, and since BBDC offered DOC to train learners like me who just graduated from the driving course in expressways and MSCP aspects, I thought why not? It would be good to get some professional guidance too. The only drawback is the cost of the lessons, but honestly I felt that DOC would be helpful and the benefits would outweigh the costs. Enrollment: From what I read on BBDC's website, you need to first book an appointment then physically go to the driving centre on your appointment date to enroll. But....apparently, from what I gathered from others who enrolled in DOC, that is old protocol and apparently you can just walk in without an appointment for enrollment. Call and email BBDC to confirm! Day 1 First lesson! H...

Conclusion and final remarks

Image
I definitely want to thank  1)My family for supporting me all the way, especially my dad for driving me to BBDC and back home when his schedule allowed him to so that I could avoid the 1.5h+ long travelling time and bad weather. 2) Very dedicated instructors (both from my group G8030 and other groups when I go for try sell lessons)! Their commitment and effort in helping me improve and become a safer, more proficient driver is really commendable. Most of them are friendly and are happy to help with my doubts. Tbh I made a lot of mistakes and sometimes they are really silly and unwarranted ๐Ÿฅฒbut they never gave up on me. I could describe my experience with every instructor if I wanted to but that would be weird so I'll skip that, but....to my tough and sometimes harsh instructors thank you for being strict at the right times so that I will keep the important things in mind and learn well from my mistakes....to my friendly and approachable instructors thanks for breaking the ice and ...

The Practical Test

Image
The striking double L plates for test car๐Ÿ˜ค I booked 4/8 (Thursday) session 7 for my practical test following the advice of my instructor to book sessions 3-7 on weekdays and avoid Fridays and weekends. I arrived at Room 3 (the warm-up waiting area) 30 minutes before the warm-up time, got my car number from an instructor and waited for my warm-up instructor to come. Got called early and the warm-up session is basically like another practical lesson, I went through the circuit courses and then drove briefly on the road, with the instructor giving me some useful tips and comments. I feel like my warm-up session went better than the actual test HAHA because it's an instructor in the car, not the tester so I was less nervous. After warm-up the instructor parked the car and told me to remember my car number and which lot the car is parked at (because later have to bring the tester to the car). If you forget also nvm because the instructor will pass you a slip with the car number and lot...

Practical lessons: Revision

Image
Day 24 Revision lessons are optional but I decided to go for them because I felt I didn't exactly feel ready for the test and needed practice to correct some of my bad habits and mistakes. Went for a night lesson today to get experience driving at night (it's the last driving session of the day, ended at 10.50pm...). Got a try-sell slot so the instructor wasn't from my group. At the start of the lesson he asked me what I intended to practice during that lesson and I told him I wanted to drive out on the main road. He said "okay, we do circuit first and if it's good then we will go to the main road" but eventually we decided to do one test route outside BBDC before coming back to do circuit.  Driving at night isn't that bad because the roads are well lit but it's still harder to see. Once, I narrowly avoided hitting a pedestrian who was crossing the road at the pedestrian crossing when I was making a left turn. The instructor reminded me to slow down be...

Stage 4: Test routes and Stage 5: Evaluation

Image
Stage 4 has only two lessons, and is where we get to drive on the public road and cover some of the possible test routes (tester will pick the test route but he/she can change the route halfway). Here is where instructors will tell us what are the important things to take note of at certain roads or junctions, so that we can be mentally prepared in case we are asked to drive at those places during the test. Unlike Stage 3 where we are mostly driving only in the circuit, during stage 4 we can do both public road driving and circuit driving so we do come back to the circuit during lessons to revise parking etc. Day 21 Was looking forward to the lesson because finally.I.can.drive.outside. Today's instructor was the same female instructor from previous lessons. Fortunately, despite not driving on the public road for quite some time, my "road sense" didn't vanish and it didn't take long for me to get comfortable with the driving. I made sure to do my safety checks (wan...

Practical lessons: Stage 3

Image
For Stage 3 we learn how to drive in the circuit and here I really get the chance to familiarise myself with the layout, numbers and the various parts of the circuit. Parking is also learnt here (thats the one thing I'm pretty scared of because there's little room for error with the narrow parking space)! Also, driving in the circuit can be tricky because its easy to be careless and turn from the wrong lane or turn right from a left only lane etc, which is why everytime I'm in the circuit, I try to remind myself to be alert!  Day 14 Okay so compared to driving on the public roads, driving in the circuit is more monotonous, dry and "boring" haha. Today's instructor was the same female instructor from a previous lesson and I know she's quite friendly and approachable so I was looking forward to the lesson... Drove around the circuit and she gave instructions on where to turn...at which number. Got many tips on how to do a quick lane change and sharp turns in...

Practical lessons: Stage 2

Image
Stage 2 is where we learn to adhere to traffic rules and regulations. During this stage I mostly drove on the road but usually the instructor would ask me to drive a few rounds in the circuit, after that then we go out of BBDC. Day 7 Practiced driving on the roads, was reminded to slow down when approaching humps and stop a safe distance away from cars in front. We did left turns at the signalised junction (junction with traffic lights) and practiced turning left through slip road at junction. Was told to position car in centre of slip road and before the give way line first, then turn to check for approaching traffic because I tried to do the latter while moving into the slip road and ended up not being centre of the lane...But these kind of things, it will be more natural with practice! Day 8 Got a friendly, female instructor today. Her hairstyle is quite similar to one of my friends ๐Ÿ‘€ I learnt how to position my car properly in a wide lane when turning, and she also briefly told me...
